Robots Begin Guiding Shoppers in UAE Malls

Dubai – The future of retail is unfolding in real-time as AI-powered robots start assisting shoppers at City Centre Mirdif, marking a bold step in business transformation led by cutting-edge technology.

In a pioneering collaboration, the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) and Majid Al Futtaim, one of the region’s leading retail and leisure groups, have launched a pilot project that places robots directly in one of Dubai’s busiest malls. This is not a lab-bound experiment; it’s a real-world implementation where actual visitors interact with technology aimed at shaping the future of retail.

Dubai Future Labs Leads Real-World Testing

At the heart of this project is Dubai Future Labs, the innovation arm of DFF, which is spearheading the trial under the umbrella of the Dubai Robotics and Automation Programme. Two autonomous robots are currently deployed on the mall floor, offering shoppers wayfinding assistance, answering questions, and demonstrating how AI robots can create more seamless and engaging customer experiences.

“This partnership with Majid Al Futtaim is a vital part of Dubai’s strategy to accelerate digital transformation across high-impact sectors” said Khalifa Al Qama, Executive Director of Dubai Future Labs. “By introducing robotics into high-footfall public spaces, Dubai is cementing its position as a global hub for next-generation urban innovation”.

Building Smarter, Human-Centric Retail

For Majid Al Futtaim, this initiative aligns with its long-term vision for intelligent, adaptive retail spaces that leverage AI and robotics not just for efficiency, but to prioritise human experience. From improving customer service to optimising mall operations, this pilot reflects a growing trend toward data-driven, responsive environments that evolve with shopper needs.

“We view this project as a natural next step in our commitment to delivering intelligent, inclusive spaces” said Fuad Mansoor Sharaf, Managing Director of Majid Al Futtaim Shopping Malls in the UAE. “The responsible use of AI can transform how people experience our destinations and this pilot is only the beginning”.

Global Innovation, Local Impact

Interestingly, the pilot isn’t just a local experiment, it’s part of a broader global vision. The robots were developed in partnership with Osaka University as part of Japan’s Moonshot Research and Development Programme, which aims to establish an “Avatar-Symbiotic Society” by 2050. The goal: to enable robotics to overcome human physical and spatial limitations.

From the outset, both Dubai Future Foundation and Majid Al Futtaim have been keen to address ethical and social considerations. Every aspect of the pilot—technical, operational, and legal—is designed with public well-being in mind, ensuring that technological advancement goes hand-in-hand with social responsibility.

A Glimpse Into Tomorrow

This initiative exemplifies how business transformation can be driven by collaborative innovation. As more AI systems enter our daily environments, City Centre Mirdif offers a glimpse into a future where robots aren’t just tools, they’re companions, enhancing daily life.So the next time you ask for directions at a mall in Dubai, don’t be surprised if your guide isn’t human, but a smart, friendly AI robot working to make your shopping journey smoother, faster, and more personalised.
